Fad to Fade Friday

About a year ago, I wrote about the newest fad at school, glitter bouncy balls.  Now it's rare to see kids playing with them.  The fun thing about that post was all the comments from many of you about what was hot when you were in elementary school.  It seems like spring brings out the new things...
Here's the newest thing at LWS and throughout Batavia (and you can purchase them on line here), rubber bracelets that are animal shaped.
Aren't they something? When worn, they resemble a colorful version of those black rubber bracelets Madonna made popular back in her new days.   They are a hot commodity.  Kids, boys too, wear 30 at a time.  They are traded (I came across a transaction that resembled a drug deal the other day in the hall--the kids scattered as I approached), played with (because nothing is more fascinating than a rubber band), and are a huge distraction in many classrooms (my kids are pretty calm about them so far).  Our principal, at the staff's request, got on the PA yesterday to remind kids that jewelry of any kind was meant to be worn, not played with or traded.
You know, people in NYC, people in fashion, people with mega bucks believe themselves to be on the cutting edge of trends.  But it's us El Ed teachers who are in the know.  We have our fingers on the pulse of what's hot.  And some of us have a drawer collection of the things...

oooo, i remember those madonna rubber bracelets!

wow, these animal ones are MUCH cuter!

maybe you can auction off the goodies and use the money to buy can foods for the needy? or do you need to return those at the end of the school year?

not only am i wearing some, but they glow in the dark!! i have a giraffe (the only one who doesn't belong, but he was a gift/trade. i like to think he's one who "sticks his neck out for the gospel" and i have a bible, a cross and a fish. i gave them to each of our gilrs in our small group, and when we touch ours, it reminds us to pray for each other. they're fun!

Remind me to consult you before buying Christmas gifts for my nieces and nephews. I've never even heard of these let alone seen them. I am officially out of the loop. ;)
